Dorsal Intercarpal Ligament

ligamentum intercarpale dorsale

The dorsal intercarpal ligament runs from the dorsal triquetrum obliquely to the dorsal scaphoid and trapezoid, providing the dorsal proximal carpal row stability. It is incorporated in dorsal wrist capsulotomy approaches (Berger capsulotomy) for wrist arthroscopy. The dorsal intercarpal ligament contributes to carpal proprioception.

Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsMaintains dorsal proximal carpal row alignment; important in preventing dorsal carpal subluxation and in proprioceptive sensing of carpal position
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The Berger dorsal wrist capsulotomy for open wrist surgery elevates the dorsal intercarpal ligament with the overlying capsule to expose the proximal carpal row. Careful anatomical closure of the DIC ligament restores carpal stability after surgery. Attenuation of the DIC ligament in advanced carpal instability contributes to dorsal carpal subluxation.

Dorsal Carpal Subluxation

DIC ligament attenuation in advanced carpal instability producing dorsal carpal subluxation managed with dorsal capsulodesis or carpal fusion.
