Cricotracheal Membrane

membrana cricotracheal is

The fibroelastic membrane connecting the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage to the first tracheal ring, forming the junction between the laryngeal and tracheal airways.

Region: Head & Skull
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Completes the inferior attachment of the laryngeal skeleton to the trachea, transmitting tracheal movements to the laryngeal framework during swallowing and respiration.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The cricotracheal membrane is divided in laryngotracheal resection and anastomosis for subglottic stenosis. In paediatric subglottic haemangioma, the cricotracheal area is the primary zone of involvement. The membrane provides the inferior boundary of the cricothyroid membrane approach.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Subglottic Stenosis at Cricotracheal Level

Post-intubation scarring at the cricotracheal junction producing progressive airway narrowing managed by dilation, laser resection, or tracheal resection and anastomosis.
