Chopart Joint Capsule (Complete)

capsula articulationis choparti completa

The complete Chopart joint capsule encloses both the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid articulations — the two joints forming the Chopart (midtarsal or transverse tarsal) joint line. The capsules are separate but function as a coordinated unit.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Encloses both midtarsal joint articulations, allows the combined pronation-supination movement of the midtarsal joint that adapts the foot to terrain, and contains the synovial fluid for both TN and CC joint lubrication.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Chopart joint arthritis produces midfoot pain over both the TN and CC joints. Isolated TN fusion effectively treats combined Chopart arthritis by eliminating the driving articulation. Complete Chopart arthrodesis (TN + CC fusion) is reserved for rigid deformity or failed isolated TN fusion.

Chopart Joint Arthritis Management

Combined talonavicular and calcaneocuboid arthritis managed by isolated TN fusion (which effectively arthrodeses the Chopart complex by eliminating the dominant joint motion) or complete Chopart arthrodesis.
