Anterolateral Capsule of the Elbow

capsula articularis cubiti anterolateralis

The anterolateral elbow capsule covers the radiohumeral joint anteriorly, blending with the annular ligament laterally and the anterior joint capsule medially. It resists distraction at the radiohumeral joint and provides anterior stability to the elbow during extension.

Region: Upper Arm
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Resists radiohumeral joint distraction and anterior elbow subluxation, contributing to elbow stability during axial loading in the extended position.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The anterolateral elbow capsule is disrupted in elbow dislocations with lateral capsular injuries, contributing to posterolateral rotatory instability. Arthroscopic anterior capsulotomy releases contracture in post-traumatic elbow stiffness. The capsule is at risk during the anterolateral portal approach in elbow arthroscopy. In lateral elbow arthroplasty, the anterolateral capsular preservation determines stability.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Anterolateral Capsule Tear

Disruption of the anterolateral elbow capsule in elbow dislocation producing posterolateral rotatory instability and a positive lateral pivot-shift test, requiring capsular repair or reconstruction.
