Prevesical Space (Space of Retzius)

spatium prevesicale (spatium Retzii)

The prevesical space (retropubic space of Retzius) is the extraperitoneal space between the pubic symphysis and bladder anteriorly, bounded posteriorly by the umbilicovesical fascia. It contains loose areolar tissue, the paravesical venous plexus, and lymphatics.

Region: Abdomen
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The space of Retzius is developed during retropubic prostatectomy, laparoscopic TEP inguinal hernia repair, and Burch colposuspension for stress incontinence. Haematoma in this space from pelvic fracture or post-operative bleeding produces a retropubic mass detectable on pelvic CT. The paravesical venous plexus in this space accounts for significant blood loss in retropubic surgery.
