Vastus Lateralis Bursa

bursa musculi vasti lateralis

The vastus lateralis bursa lies between the vastus lateralis muscle belly and the lateral femur, reducing friction during quadriceps contraction. It is a small, inconstant bursa that becomes clinically relevant when irritated by repetitive lateral thigh loading.

Region: Thigh
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Irritation presents as diffuse lateral thigh aching, occasionally confused with iliotibial band syndrome or referred trochanteric bursitis. Ultrasound can confirm bursal distension. Management is conservative with load modification and soft tissue release.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions
