Lower Trapezius Costal Bursa

bursa costalis partis inferioris musculi trapezii

A bursa between the lower trapezius fibres and the underlying ribs at the thoracic cage, developing in the region where the lower trapezius converges toward its spinal attachment. It may become inflamed in trapezius overuse and thoracic outlet syndrome.

Region: Chest
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Lower trapezius costal bursitis contributes to mid-thoracic and interscapular pain in patients with poor scapular stability. Strengthening of the lower trapezius as part of scapular dyskinesia rehabilitation must be balanced with attention to this bursal region. Direct injection at the lower trapezius costal interface provides diagnostic and therapeutic relief.
